BIP less lethal design advantages

BIP less lethal design advantages

BIP less lethal design advantages

What was the biggest goal for the BIP less lethal round?

One of the big advantages of the BIP less lethal round, is that it was designed in part to create operational diversity for the end-user. This means that it can used it at short range and long range.

Who engineered the BIP and why?

The highly skilled engineers who developed this round did so with former end-users in military and law enforcement. Some of the engineers are ex-military. They knew the importance of giving officers, security forces and military a round that, in a critical instance, was able to perform whether the officer was at a short or long range from the subject. Determining the distance between the officer and the subject was not critical. They could simply address the threat, pull the trigger, and be confident that the ammunition will deploy safely and effectively. That was the goal of the development. I really think they exceeded those expectations.

What other design advantages does it have?

The biggest advantage we have with the BIP, is that it’s not driven by the amount of charge or gun powder. It is driven by the ammunition of the round, the use of total range. Where we have the advantage is the collapsible head. We have a velocity dependent collapsible head, which means when we hit you at short range you’re going to get maximum dispersion of that head. It’ll create a nice safe cushion. If we hit a subject at two hundred feet, you’re going to get a dispersion of the energy within the head. The dispersion will be equal to the force being applied at that distance. This results in two things happening: 1) A high level of pain, 2) a higher level of safety. With the design of the unique head that we have, we don’t have to change our powdering for different distances. We can powder the round enough, that we can get it to go eighty yards but it’s still safe using at five feet. Really the advantage we have is the velocity dependent collapsible head. That’s what makes us stand out above the rest.

Short and long range is the standout feature?

The BIP allows you to use it at a very short range. Comparatively, there are other 40mm rounds that have foam heads, but you have to switch between different varieties. That’s just not practical. The BIP allows use at short range (2 yards / 6.5 feet) and long range (80 yards / 262 feet).

Why is the BIP better than other less lethal rounds?

With most first generation type less-lethal impact rounds, there’s not a lot of engineering. They were designed to cause pain with little regard for safety. We have actually engineered a round with moving parts, so not only do we have a velocity dependable collapsible head, we have guide expanders that disperse the inertia upon impact. We have three components that work in unison to make this a highly effective and safer round, the collapsible head, the guide expander and the overall energy absorption system.

Police forces are under increased pressure to find alternatives to the use of deadly weapons. Organizations considering implementing less lethal weapons must measure the overall welfare effects of substituting traditional firearms in the use of force. They must evaluate the overall costs associated with the use of traditional ammunition in confrontations versus less lethal solutions.
